Do you need a DAC for IEMs?
Probably not an expensive one. Your IEM does need digital audio converted somewhere, but for most people the DAC already in their device or a simple USB-C dongle is enough.
The short version
- You need a DAC somewhere in the chain. You do not necessarily need to buy a separate DAC.
- If your phone, laptop or dongle already gets your IEM loud enough without hiss or obvious problems, upgrading the DAC should be low on your list.
- A separate DAC/amp makes more sense when you need a missing headphone jack, more power, cleaner output, better volume control or other specific features.

DAC is one of those audio terms that starts simple and gets confusing very quickly.
You buy a ₱1,000 or ₱2,000 pair of IEMs, read a few discussions online, and suddenly someone is telling you that you also need another box or dongle before the earphones can sound right.
Usually, you do not.
The useful question is not "Do I need a DAC?"
It is "Is the DAC and amplifier I already have causing a problem?"
First: what a DAC actually does
Your music starts as digital data.
An IEM needs an analog electrical signal to move its driver and make sound.
A DAC — digital-to-analog converter — turns the digital audio into that analog signal. An amplifier then brings that signal to the level needed by the earphone.
If your phone has a 3.5mm headphone jack, that conversion is already happening inside the phone.
If you plug a 3.5mm IEM into an active USB-C dongle, the DAC and amplifier are inside the dongle.
And with a digital USB-C IEM, those electronics can be built into the cable or plug itself. Android's USB-audio documentation describes exactly this arrangement: digital audio is sent to an external peripheral, where a DAC converts it for the analog earphone output.
So when somebody says an IEM "needs a DAC," that statement by itself does not tell you very much.
It already has to be using one somewhere.
At a glance
The conversion is already happening somewhere.
Most IEMs do not need a big amplifier
IEMs sit extremely close to your eardrum and many are designed to reach normal listening levels from portable devices.
That does not mean every IEM is equally easy to drive. Sensitivity and impedance vary between models.
It does mean that buying the most powerful amplifier you can afford is not automatically useful.
Power only helps if you actually need more of it.
If your existing source reaches a comfortable listening volume well before maximum and remains clean while doing it, more amplifier power is unlikely to be the upgrade you are looking for.
Do not confuse impedance with quality either. Shure's own explanation of headphone specifications covers how to interpret these figures: a higher impedance figure does not mean a headphone or earphone is inherently better.
So when should you buy a DAC or dongle?
There are a few good reasons.
Your device has no headphone jack
This is the obvious one.
If your phone only has USB-C and your IEM ends in 3.5mm, you need something between them.
A small USB-C-to-3.5mm DAC is often all that is required. Apple, for example, supports its USB-C-to-3.5mm adapter for connecting standard analog headphones to USB-C devices.
That is not an audiophile upgrade. It is simply the part that makes the connection possible.
Your IEM is too quiet
If you are reaching maximum volume and still do not have enough headroom, a more capable source may help.
Before buying one, check the IEM's sensitivity and impedance and make sure the new DAC/amp can actually provide more useful output into that load.
You hear hiss when nothing is playing
Very sensitive IEMs can reveal electrical noise that less sensitive headphones hide.
A clean, low-noise source can solve this.
Importantly, a larger or more powerful amplifier is not automatically quieter. For sensitive IEMs, low noise matters just as much as power.
The IEM sounds noticeably different between devices
This can happen.
One reason is output impedance: the electrical interaction between the source and the earphone.
Certain IEM designs — particularly some multi-driver models — can change frequency response when connected to a source with unusually high output impedance. Independent measurements from Sonarworks demonstrate this behaviour on a multi-BA IEM.
If your IEM sounds balanced from your phone but strangely bassy, dull or otherwise different from a particular laptop or motherboard jack, a competent low-output-impedance dongle may solve the problem.
That is a real source issue.
It is different from buying a DAC because you expect every song to become more detailed.
You want features your current source does not have
This is where more expensive DACs can make sense even when the IEM is already loud enough.
You might want:
- finer physical volume control;
- hardware EQ or DSP;
- multiple outputs;
- a balanced connector required by a particular cable;
- desktop inputs and outputs;
- easier switching between a computer and phone.
Those are concrete features.
Buy the feature you need rather than the idea that a bigger DAC must sound better.
What about "Hi-Res" DACs?
Do not make the logo your buying criterion.
A DAC supporting very high sample rates does not automatically make ordinary music sound better, and an IEM does not suddenly gain resolution because the number printed on the DAC box is larger.
For a basic IEM setup, clean output, appropriate power, low noise and sensible compatibility matter more.
The same applies to large metal dongles that advertise far more output power than your IEM needs.
More capability can be useful for future headphones. It does not mean you need that capability today.
A simple test before you spend money
Use your current source.
Play a few well-recorded songs you know.
Ask four questions:
Is it loud enough?
If yes, you probably do not need more power.
Can you hear hiss during quiet passages or when playback stops?
If no, the noise floor is probably not bothering you.
Does the balance of bass, mids and treble sound normal compared with another competent source?
If yes, source impedance is unlikely to be creating an obvious problem. Compare at a similar comfortable loudness, with EQ and other sound effects matched or disabled.
Are you missing a feature you genuinely want?
If no, there may be nothing to fix.
That is a much better reason to keep your money than a vague promise of "unlocking the full potential" of an inexpensive IEM.
What this means when you're buying
For a first IEM, put most of the budget into the earphone itself and getting the fit right.
If your phone has no 3.5mm jack, add a sensible USB-C dongle.
Then stop.
Use the IEM for a while before deciding you need something more expensive.
A better DAC can solve real problems. But if you cannot name the problem you are trying to solve, you probably do not need one yet.
